Helen Thompson’s presentation offers both an “aha” and an “of course” experience. It is energizing and thought-provoking, with connections for the people of God about where we have been, where we are now, and where we might be going. It brings insight and new models for understanding our changing world view, new religious paradigms, current spiritual language, and emerging global roles.
Sr. Helen invites an exploration of the differing ways people have imaged God, the world and the universe, the Church, themselves, and Jesus throughout the whole of human history. Our images change over time – both collectively and individually. These changes in imagery relate to the evolutionary development of human and spiritual consciousness. Greater understanding of this development engenders hope and a sense of possibility for an emerging cosmos of distributive justice and true peace. It moves us toward action, with new energy for enabling the coming of that realm of community and communion for which we hunger.
Helen Thompson is a Sister of Charity, BVM, with a doctoral degree as an educator and a master’s degree in theology. She has taught courses on Leadership, Spirituality, and Ministry at the School of Applied Theology at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. She is repeatedly invited to speak at national and regional Call to Action conferences, and by parish renewal groups in California.
Please join us for this edifying and energizing day on the eve of Pentecost.

A Journey of Conscience
An evening with Fr. Roy Bourgeois
On Friday, April 9th, Call to Action NW Oregon will sponsor an evening with Fr. Roy
Bourgeois, Maryknoll priest, founder of the School of the Americas Watch, Vietnam
veteran and Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
The evening presentation is titled:
A Journey of Conscience: Women Are Finding A Way in the Church
Join us at 7:00 pm
at Central Lutheran Church,
1820 NE 21st Ave., Portland, Oregon
This event is part of a national tour titled "Break the Silence. Shatter the
Stained-Glass Ceiling" organized by national Women's Ordination Conference (WOC) and
Call to Action-USA. Local contact: Nancy Barrett-Dennehy, ndbdpdx@comcast.net,
503-238-1942
Father Roy Bourgeois, a priest for 37 years, has been threatened with
excommunication for his public support of women's ordination. Along with a panel of
three local women church leaders, he will give the background for his commitment to
working for women's ordination and for peace and justice within the Catholic Church
and in society.
"Excluding women from priesthood is a grave injustice in our Church. I believe our
Church's teaching on this issue is wrong and does not stand up to scrutiny. Sexism
is a sin, and no matter how hard or how long we may try to justify discrimination,
in the end, it is always immoral," stated Fr. Bourgeois.
Date: Friday, April 9, 2010
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Central Lutheran Church
820 NE 21st Ave.
Portland, OR
Cost: $10 free-will donation
